Board-Eligible Adult Psychiatrist
Individualized, evidence-based psychiatric care grounded in thoughtful evaluation, honesty, and compassion.
Dr. Michael Shu is a board-eligible adult psychiatrist who recognizes that each person’s experience of psychiatric illness is unique. His approach begins with a thoughtful understanding of developmental history, clinical symptoms, and the biological factors that can influence mental health.
He works with patients experiencing a wide range of psychiatric concerns, with particular interests in mood and anxiety disorders, personality disorders, psychotic illness, addiction medicine, and integrative psychiatry.
Dr. Shu has trained in both urban and rural settings, caring for patients with complex psychiatric conditions and diverse psychosocial backgrounds.
His approach to psychiatric care is individualized and evidence-based. He recognizes that each patient’s experience of psychiatric illness is unique and believes personalized treatment begins with thoughtful and thorough consideration of developmental history, clinical phenomenology, neurophysiology, and psychopharmacology.
Dr. Shu strives to approach treatment with both honesty and compassion, working to understand the individual experiences and circumstances that shape each patient’s mental health.
Conditions Treated
Treatment recommendations are individualized and developed collaboratively with each patient based on their needs, goals, and circumstances.
In-Depth Training
Dr. Shu has a strong clinical interest in addiction medicine. His psychiatry residency training included outpatient, inpatient, and emergency psychiatry, with a particular focus on addiction medicine alongside the treatment of complex psychiatric conditions.
Dr. Shu has a special interest in integrative psychiatry and recognizes the important roles that sleep, diet, and fitness can play in mental health.
His approach considers these aspects of daily life alongside psychiatric evaluation and treatment to develop care that reflects the individual patient.
Dr. Shu’s residency training included a strong interest and focus in psychodynamic therapy. This perspective supports his emphasis on understanding developmental history and each patient’s individual experience when approaching psychiatric treatment.
Approach to Care
Dr. Shu believes that effective psychiatric treatment should reflect the individual experience of each patient.
His approach begins with careful consideration of developmental history, clinical phenomenology, neurophysiology, and psychopharmacology. Rather than approaching psychiatric illness through symptoms alone, he seeks to understand the factors that contribute to each patient’s experience and use that understanding to guide personalized treatment.
Dr. Shu believes therapy should be both honest and compassionate. His goal is to provide thoughtful, evidence-based care that respects the complexity and individuality of each patient.
Academic Background
During residency, Dr. Shu participated in the education of junior residents and medical students and served as a lead for case presentations, journal clubs, individual and group therapy, and residency recruitment.
His research experience includes work at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia studying associations between COVID-related discrimination and mental health among youth across racial groups during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Professional Background
Before committing to medicine, Dr. Shu worked as a cook at fine-dining restaurants on the East Coast, including a Michelin-starred restaurant.
His experiences in food and hospitality helped him develop a deep appreciation for food, culture, and their capacity to create meaning and deeper human connection.
That interest continued during medical school, where he served as Co-President of the Temple University Culinary Medicine Initiative. His work included participating in diet-focused workshops with patients and helping direct dinner service for a student-run clinic.
