Adult Psychiatry

What is adult psychiatry (AP)?

Adult psychiatry focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of mental health conditions affecting adults.

At Adelpha, adult psychiatry is approached through a whole-person lens. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms or diagnoses, our physicians work to understand the broader picture, including your medical history, relationships, life circumstances, treatment goals, and previous experiences with care.

Our team works with adults experiencing a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • ADHD
  • Panic disorder
  • Trauma-related concerns
  • Schizophrenia and psychotic disorders
  • Schizoaffective disorder
  • Substance use concerns
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Mood disorders
  • Grief and life transitions
  • Stress-related concerns
  • Other psychiatric conditions

Whether your concerns are new or long-standing, our goal is to help determine
the most thoughtful and appropriate path forward.

What services are included in adult psychiatry?

Adult psychiatric care may include a variety of treatment options depending on your individual needs.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy provides a supportive and collaborative space to better understand emotions, behaviors, relationships, and life experiences. Our physicians utilize evidence-based therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and other specialized modalities when clinically appropriate.

Medication Management

Medication may be one part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Our physicians provide thoughtful medication evaluation, prescribing, monitoring, and ongoing support when psychiatric medications are recommended.

Adelpha physicians also have experience with specialized medication management, including clozapine management, MAOI treatment, Suboxone treatment for opioid use disorder, and medication considerations during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Coordinated Care

Many patients receive multiple services within Adelpha’s coordinated practice model. When appropriate, we also collaborate with primary care physicians, therapists, schools, and other healthcare professionals involved in a patient’s care.

Can I receive both medication management and psychotherapy?

Yes.

Some patients choose to work with the same physician for both psychotherapy and medication management when clinically appropriate. Others may receive care from multiple providers as part of a coordinated treatment plan.

If you already have an established relationship with a therapist, our physicians can also collaborate with your existing treatment team to support continuity of care.

What happens during an adult psychiatry consultation?

The first phase of treatment is designed to help your physician understand you fully before making recommendations.

During your consultation visits, your physician will review your history, current concerns, treatment goals, previous treatment experiences, medical background, and any factors that may be contributing to your symptoms.

When appropriate and with your permission, we may also coordinate with other healthcare providers involved in your care, such as your primary care physician or therapist. In some situations, family input may also be helpful.

This consultation process allows us to develop a clear understanding of your needs and create a thoughtful, evidence-based treatment plan tailored to your situation.

Do you offer telehealth appointments?

Yes.

Adelpha offers both in-person and telehealth appointments. Telehealth availability is determined based on clinical needs, location requirements, safety considerations, and provider recommendations.

Your physician will help determine whether telehealth is appropria
te for your care.

Insurance support is part of making care accessible

Insurance and Courtesy Billing

We know cost and insurance questions can be stressful. Our team will help make the financial side of care as clear as possible and help you understand what information is needed before treatment begins.

The first step is a consultation process.

What to Expect when you Reach Out

Thoughtful care starts with a thorough evaluation.

At Adelpha, getting started does not mean rushing into treatment without context. The first few visits start with an initial consultation period. This process includes at least two visits for adults and three visits for children and adolescents within the first month. This gives your physician or marriage and family therapist time to understand your history, current concerns, goals, previous treatment, and what kind of care may be helpful.

When appropriate, your physician or marriage and family therapist may ask to coordinate with your prior or current mental health providers, your primary care physician, or family members involved in your care. At the end of the consultation phase, we will share our impressions and recommendations. We will work with you to determine whether ongoing care with Adelpha is clinically appropriate and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
