Anxiety

Anxiety can affect how you think, feel, sleep, work, connect with others, and move through daily life. While occasional worry is a normal part of being human, anxiety can become overwhelming when it persists, feels difficult to control, or begins interfering with everyday functioning.

At Adelpha Psychiatric Group, our physicians provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for anxiety disorders in children, adolescents, and adults. We take time to understand your symptoms, history, life circumstances, and treatment goals before making recommendations.

Treatment may include psychotherapy, medication management, or a combination of approaches depending on your individual needs.

Anxiety

What are anxiety disorders??

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by excessive fear, worry, nervousness, or anxiety that interferes with daily life.

Common anxiety disorders include:

Some people experience one anxiety disorder, while others may experience symptoms that overlap across multiple conditions.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health concerns and can affect people of all ages.

Anxiety

How do I know if my anxiety may be more than everyday stress?

Everyone experiences stress, worry, or nervousness from time to time.

Anxiety may warrant professional evaluation when symptoms become persistent, difficult to manage, or begin affecting work, school, relationships, sleep, or daily functioning.

Common symptoms may include:
  • Excessive worry
  • Feeling constantly on edge
  • Difficulty relaxing
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Sleep disruption
  • Muscle tension
  • Racing thoughts
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Physical symptoms such as stomach discomfort, sweating, or trembling
If anxiety feels like it is controlling your life rather than helping you respond to challenges, it may be time to seek support.

Anxiety

What is the difference between anxiety and panic attacks?

Anxiety often builds gradually and may involve ongoing worry, tension, or fear about future events.
Panic attacks are sudden episodes of intense fear or discomfort that may include:
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Dizziness
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Feelings of losing control

Some people experience anxiety without panic attacks, while others experience both.

Because symptoms can overlap with other medical or psychiatric conditions, a thorough evaluation is important before treatment recommendations are made.

Anxiety

Is PTSD an anxiety disorder?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is classified as a trauma-related condition rather than an anxiety disorder.
However, PTSD and anxiety disorders can share many symptoms, including hypervigilance, fear, sleep difficulties, concentration problems, and emotional distress.

Some individuals experience both anxiety and trauma-related symptoms at the same time.

During the evaluation process, your physician will work to understand the full picture before making treatment recommendations.

treatments

How are anxiety disorders treated?

Treatment depends on the individual, the severity of symptoms, and personal goals.

Treatment recommendations may include:

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy helps patients better understand anxiety, develop coping strategies, identify patterns, and build skills for managing symptoms. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based approaches are commonly used for anxiety treatment.

Medication Management

Medication may be recommended when clinically appropriate. Several types of medications can help reduce anxiety symptoms and improve daily functioning.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

For some patients, TMS may be an appropriate treatment option. TMS is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment that may be considered for OCD or when anxiety co-occurs with depression that has not improved sufficiently with other treatments or when medication interventions have not been tolerated.

Comprehensive Care

Because anxiety can overlap with depression, ADHD, trauma-related concerns, sleep difficulties, and other mental health conditions, treatment often involves understanding the broader context of a person’s experience rather than focusing on symptoms alone.

Can anxiety get better?

Yes.

Many people experience significant improvement with appropriate treatment and support. The goal is not to eliminate every feeling of worry or stress but to help anxiety become more manageable and less disruptive to everyday life.

With the right treatment plan, many patients are able to improve functioning, strengthen relationships, and regain a greater sense of confidence and control.

You Do Not Need a Diagnosis to Reach Out

Many patients come to Adelpha without knowing exactly what condition they may be experiencing.

Symptoms often overlap. Anxiety can look like ADHD. Depression can occur alongside trauma. Mood changes may have many possible causes.

The purpose of the consultation process is not simply to assign a label. It is to understand the full picture and help determine what type of support may be most appropriate.

Whether you have an existing diagnosis, are seeking a second opinion, or are simply looking for answers, our team can help guide the next step.

Insurance and Courtesy Billing

We know cost and insurance questions can be stressful. Our team will help make the financial side of care as clear as possible and help you understand what information is needed before treatment begins.

The first step is a consultation process.

What to Expect when you Reach Out

Thoughtful care starts with a thorough evaluation.

At Adelpha, getting started does not mean rushing into treatment without context. The first few visits start with an initial consultation period. This process includes at least two visits for adults and three visits for children and adolescents within the first month. This gives your physician or marriage and family therapist time to understand your history, current concerns, goals, previous treatment, and what kind of care may be helpful.

When appropriate, your physician or marriage and family therapist may ask to coordinate with your prior or current mental health providers, your primary care physician, or family members involved in your care. At the end of the consultation phase, we will share our impressions and recommendations. We will work with you to determine whether ongoing care with Adelpha is clinically appropriate and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
