Mood Disorders

Everyone experiences changes in mood throughout life. However, when emotional highs, lows, irritability, sadness, or changes in energy become persistent and begin affecting daily functioning, they may be signs of a mood disorder.

At Adelpha Psychiatric Group, our physicians provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for a wide range of mood disorders in adolescents and adults. We take time to understand symptoms, medical history, life circumstances, treatment experiences, and personal goals before making recommendations.

Treatment may include psychotherapy, medication management, lifestyle considerations, and ongoing psychiatric care tailored to each individual’s needs.

Mood Disorders

What are mood disorders?

Mood disorders are mental health conditions that primarily affect a person’s emotional state, energy levels, and overall sense of well-being.

These conditions can cause persistent changes in mood that interfere with relationships, work, school, daily responsibilities, and quality of life.

Common mood disorders include:

  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
  • Postpartum Depression and related perinatal mood concerns
Mood disorders can vary significantly in severity, duration, and presentation from person to person.

  • Persistent sadness
  • Irritability
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Low energy or fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Changes in sleep patterns

Mood Disorders

How do I know if my symptoms may be a mood disorder?

Mood disorders typically involve symptoms that persist for weeks or longer and interfere with daily functioning.

It may be helpful to seek an evaluation if changes in mood are affecting:

  • Relationships
  • Work performance
  • School performance
  • Sleep
  • Physical health
  • Daily responsibilities
  • Overall quality of life

A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation can help determine whether symptoms are related to a mood disorder or another mental health concern.

Mood Disorders

How are mood disorders diagnosed?

Diagnosis begins with a thorough psychiatric evaluation.

Your physician will review your symptoms, personal and family history, medical history, previous treatment experiences, and other factors that may be contributing to changes in mood.

Because conditions such as anxiety, trauma-related concerns, ADHD, sleep disorders, medical conditions, and substance use can sometimes affect mood, understanding the full picture is an important part of the evaluation process.

treatments

How are mood disorders treated?

Treatment is individualized and depends on the diagnosis, symptom severity, treatment history, and personal goals.

Treatment recommendations may include:

Psychotherapy

Therapy can help patients better understand emotions, identify patterns, strengthen coping skills, improve relationships, and develop strategies for managing symptoms.

Medication Management

Medication may be recommended when clinically appropriate to help stabilize mood and reduce symptoms. Ongoing medication management allows treatment to be adjusted as needs change over time.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

For some patients, TMS may be an appropriate treatment option. TMS is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment that may be considered when depression has not improved sufficiently with other treatments or medication interventions have not been tolerated.

Comprehensive Care

Treatment often involves looking beyond symptoms alone. Sleep, stress, relationships, physical health, work demands, and major life events can all influence mood and overall well-being.

You Do Not Need a Diagnosis to Reach Out

Many patients come to Adelpha without knowing exactly what condition they may be experiencing.

Symptoms often overlap. Anxiety can look like ADHD. Depression can occur alongside trauma. Mood changes may have many possible causes.

The purpose of the consultation process is not simply to assign a label. It is to understand the full picture and help determine what type of support may be most appropriate.

Whether you have an existing diagnosis, are seeking a second opinion, or are simply looking for answers, our team can help guide the next step.

Insurance and Courtesy Billing

The first step is a consultation process.

What to Expect when you Reach Out

Thoughtful care starts with a thorough evaluation.

At Adelpha, getting started does not mean rushing into treatment without context. The first few visits start with an initial consultation period. This process includes at least two visits for adults and three visits for children and adolescents within the first month. This gives your physician or marriage and family therapist time to understand your history, current concerns, goals, previous treatment, and what kind of care may be helpful.

When appropriate, your physician or marriage and family therapist may ask to coordinate with your prior or current mental health providers, your primary care physician, or family members involved in your care. At the end of the consultation phase, we will share our impressions and recommendations. We will work with you to determine whether ongoing care with Adelpha is clinically appropriate and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
