Psychotic Disorders

Psychotic disorders can affect how a person perceives reality, processes information, and experiences the world around them. These conditions may involve changes in thinking, perception, behavior, emotions, and daily functioning that can be distressing for both individuals and their families.

At Adelpha Psychiatric Group, our physicians provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for psychotic disorders in adolescents and adults. We take time to understand each person’s symptoms, medical history, treatment experiences, support systems, and goals before making recommendations.

Treatment may include medication management, psychotherapy, family involvement, and coordinated care designed to support long-term stability and quality of life.

What are Psychotic Disorders?

Psychotic disorders are mental health conditions that affect a person’s ability to accurately interpret or perceive reality.

Psychosis is a symptom that can occur as part of several psychiatric and medical conditions.

Adelpha provides evaluation and treatment for conditions including:

  • Schizophrenia
  • Schizoaffective Disorder
  • Delusional Disorder
  • Substance-Induced Psychosis
  • Other psychotic disorders

Psychotic symptoms can also occur in association with certain medical conditions, neurological conditions, or substance use concerns.

Because many different factors can contribute to psychotic symptoms, a thorough psychiatric evaluation is an important first step.

What are common signs of psychosis?

Psychotic symptoms can vary significantly from person to person.
Common symptoms may include:

Hallucinations
Hallucinations involve sensing things that are not present to others. Examples may include hearing voices, seeing images, or experiencing other sensory perceptions that feel real to the individual.

Delusions
Delusions are strongly held beliefs that remain fixed despite evidence to the contrary. These beliefs can involve many different themes and experiences.

Disorganized Thinking
Some individuals experience difficulty organizing thoughts, following conversations, communicating clearly, or maintaining logical connections between ideas.

Changes in Behavior
Psychotic symptoms may also affect daily functioning, relationships, work performance, school performance, motivation, self-care, or emotional expression.

When should someone seek help?

A psychiatric evaluation may be helpful if you or a loved one is experiencing:
  • Hallucinations
  • Delusional beliefs
  • Significant changes in thinking
  • Sudden changes in behavior
  • Increasing confusion
  • Social withdrawal
  • Difficulty functioning at work, school, or home
  • Worsening symptoms despite treatment
Early evaluation and treatment can often help improve outcomes and reduce the impact symptoms have on daily life.

How are psychotic disorders diagnosed?

Diagnosis begins with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation.

Your physician will review symptoms, medical history, psychiatric history, medications, family history, substance use history, and other factors that may be contributing to symptoms.

Because psychosis can occur in multiple conditions, understanding the full picture is essential before making treatment recommendations.

Can people with psychotic disorders live meaningful and productive lives

Yes.

Many individuals with psychotic disorders are able to achieve meaningful improvement with appropriate treatment and support. While these conditions often require ongoing care, treatment can help reduce symptoms, improve functioning, strengthen relationships, and support long-term stability.

The goal is not only symptom management but helping individuals build lives that feel meaningful, connected, and sustainable.

How are psychotic disorders treated?

Treatment is individualized and depends on the diagnosis, symptom severity, treatment history, and personal goals.

Treatment recommendations may include:

Medication Management

Medication is often an important part of treatment and may help reduce symptoms, improve stability, and support daily functioning. Ongoing medication management allows treatment to be adjusted as needs change over time.

Psychotherapy

Therapy can help individuals better understand their experiences, strengthen coping skills, improve communication, and navigate the challenges that can accompany psychotic disorders.

Family Support and Coordinated Care

Psychotic disorders often affect both individuals and their loved ones. Family involvement, education, and coordination with other healthcare providers can play an important role in treatment and recovery.

You Do Not Need a Diagnosis to Reach Out

Many patients come to Adelpha without knowing exactly what condition they may be experiencing.

Symptoms often overlap. Anxiety can look like ADHD. Depression can occur alongside trauma. Mood changes may have many possible causes.

The purpose of the consultation process is not simply to assign a label. It is to understand the full picture and help determine what type of support may be most appropriate.

Whether you have an existing diagnosis, are seeking a second opinion, or are simply looking for answers, our team can help guide the next step.

Insurance support is part of making care accessible

Insurance and Courtesy Billing

We know cost and insurance questions can be stressful. Our team will help make the financial side of care as clear as possible and help you understand what information is needed before treatment begins.

The first step is a consultation process.

What to Expect when you Reach Out

Thoughtful care starts with a thorough evaluation.

At Adelpha, getting started does not mean rushing into treatment without context. The first few visits start with an initial consultation period. This process includes at least two visits for adults and three visits for children and adolescents within the first month. This gives your physician or marriage and family therapist time to understand your history, current concerns, goals, previous treatment, and what kind of care may be helpful.

When appropriate, your physician or marriage and family therapist may ask to coordinate with your prior or current mental health providers, your primary care physician, or family members involved in your care. At the end of the consultation phase, we will share our impressions and recommendations. We will work with you to determine whether ongoing care with Adelpha is clinically appropriate and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
