Schizoaffective disorder is a complex mental health condition that includes symptoms of both psychosis and mood disorders. These symptoms can affect thinking, emotions, relationships, work, school, and daily functioning.
At Adelpha Psychiatric Group, our physicians provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for adolescents and adults experiencing symptoms of schizoaffective disorder. We take time to understand each person’s symptoms, treatment history, support system, and goals before making recommendations.
Treatment may include medication management, psychotherapy, family involvement, and coordinated psychiatric care designed to support long-term stability and quality of life.

Schizoaffective disorder is a mental health condition that involves symptoms of psychosis alongside symptoms of a mood disorder.
Psychotic symptoms may include hallucinations, delusions, or changes in thinking and perception, while mood symptoms may involve depression, mania, or significant mood instability.
There are two primary types of schizoaffective disorder
Depressive Type
This type includes psychotic symptoms along with major depressive episodes.
Bipolar Type
This type includes psychotic symptoms along with periods of mania and may also include depressive episodes.
Because symptoms can overlap with other psychiatric conditions, a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is important for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

While both conditions can involve psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions, schizoaffective disorder also includes significant mood symptoms.
These mood symptoms may involve major depression, mania, or both, depending on the specific type of schizoaffective disorder.
A thorough psychiatric evaluation helps distinguish between schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other mental health conditions.

Yes.
Many individuals with schizoaffective disorder experience meaningful improvement with appropriate treatment and support. While ongoing care is often important, treatment can help reduce symptoms, improve stability, strengthen relationships, and support greater independence and quality of life.
The goal is not simply symptom management. The goal is to help individuals build lives that feel meaningful, connected, and sustainable.

Many patients come to Adelpha without knowing exactly what condition they may be experiencing.
Symptoms often overlap. Anxiety can look like ADHD. Depression can occur alongside trauma. Mood changes may have many possible causes.
The purpose of the consultation process is not simply to assign a label. It is to understand the full picture and help determine what type of support may be most appropriate.
Whether you have an existing diagnosis, are seeking a second opinion, or are simply looking for answers, our team can help guide the next step.
Insurance support is part of making care accessible
The first step is a consultation process.
Thoughtful care starts with a thorough evaluation.
At Adelpha, getting started does not mean rushing into treatment without context. The first few visits start with an initial consultation period. This process includes at least two visits for adults and three visits for children and adolescents within the first month. This gives your physician or marriage and family therapist time to understand your history, current concerns, goals, previous treatment, and what kind of care may be helpful.
When appropriate, your physician or marriage and family therapist may ask to coordinate with your prior or current mental health providers, your primary care physician, or family members involved in your care. At the end of the consultation phase, we will share our impressions and recommendations. We will work with you to determine whether ongoing care with Adelpha is clinically appropriate and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
