Depression

Depression can affect how you think, feel, sleep, relate to others, and move through daily life. While many people experience periods of sadness or grief, depression is more than a difficult day or a temporary emotional response. It can affect motivation, energy, concentration, relationships, and overall quality of life.

At Adelpha Psychiatric Group, our physicians provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for depression in adolescents and adults. We take time to understand your symptoms, history, treatment experiences, relationships, life circumstances, and goals before making recommendations.

Treatment may include psychotherapy, medication management, TMS, or a combination of approaches depending on your needs.

Depression

What is depression?

Depression is a mental health condition that can affect mood, thinking, behavior, physical health, and daily functioning.

While symptoms vary from person to person, depression often extends beyond feelings of sadness and can influence many aspects of life, including work, school, relationships, sleep, and self-care.

Depression can range from mild to severe and may occur on its own or alongside other mental health conditions.

Depression

What is the difference between sadness and depression?

Sadness is a normal human emotion that often occurs in response to disappointment, loss, stress, or difficult life circumstances.

Depression is different because symptoms tend to be more persistent, more disruptive, and often affect multiple areas of functioning.

Many people with depression describe feeling unable to engage with life in the way they once did. Activities that were previously enjoyable may become difficult, overwhelming, or uninteresting.

A comprehensive evaluation can help determine whether symptoms may be related to depression or another condition.

Depression

What are common symptoms of depression?

Symptoms vary from person to person but may include:

  • Persistent sadness
  • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
  • Low energy or fatigue
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Changes in appetite
  • Irritability
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Social withdrawal
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Not everyone experiences the same symptoms, and depression can look different depending on age, life circumstances, and individual factors.

Depression

Can depression improve with treatment?

Yes.

Many people experience meaningful improvement with appropriate treatment and support. While recovery looks different for each person, treatment can help reduce symptoms, improve functioning, strengthen relationships, and restore a greater sense of well-being.

The first step is understanding what you are experiencing and developing a treatment plan that reflects your individual needs and goals.

treatments

How is depression treated?

Treatment depends on the individual, symptom severity, treatment history, and personal goals.

Treatment recommendations may include:

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy helps patients better understand emotions, thought patterns, relationships, behaviors, and life experiences that may contribute to depression. Evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other therapeutic modalities may be recommended.

Medication Management

Medication may be recommended when clinically appropriate. Antidepressants and other medications can help reduce symptoms and support recovery for some individuals.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

For some patients, TMS may be an appropriate treatment option. TMS is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment that may be considered when depression has not improved sufficiently with other treatments or medication interventions have not been tolerated.

Comprehensive Care

Depression often affects many aspects of life. Treatment may involve addressing sleep, stress, relationships, physical health, work challenges, and other contributing factors as part of a broader treatment plan.

You Do Not Need a Diagnosis to Reach Out

Many patients come to Adelpha without knowing exactly what condition they may be experiencing.

Symptoms often overlap. Anxiety can look like ADHD. Depression can occur alongside trauma. Mood changes may have many possible causes.

The purpose of the consultation process is not simply to assign a label. It is to understand the full picture and help determine what type of support may be most appropriate.

Whether you have an existing diagnosis, are seeking a second opinion, or are simply looking for answers, our team can help guide the next step.

The first step is a consultation process.

What to Expect when you Reach Out

Thoughtful care starts with a thorough evaluation.

At Adelpha, getting started does not mean rushing into treatment without context. The first few visits start with an initial consultation period. This process includes at least two visits for adults and three visits for children and adolescents within the first month. This gives your physician or marriage and family therapist time to understand your history, current concerns, goals, previous treatment, and what kind of care may be helpful.

When appropriate, your physician or marriage and family therapist may ask to coordinate with your prior or current mental health providers, your primary care physician, or family members involved in your care. At the end of the consultation phase, we will share our impressions and recommendations. We will work with you to determine whether ongoing care with Adelpha is clinically appropriate and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
