Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that can affect energy levels, emotions, thinking, sleep, behavior, and daily functioning. While many people associate bipolar disorder with mood swings, the condition involves distinct mood episodes that are often more intense and longer-lasting than ordinary changes in mood.

At Adelpha Psychiatric Group, our physicians provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for bipolar disorder in adolescents and adults. We take time to understand each patient’s symptoms, history, treatment experiences, and goals before making recommendations.

Treatment may include medication management, psychotherapy, lifestyle support, and ongoing psychiatric care tailored to the individual.

Bipolar Disorder

What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by significant shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and functioning.

These shifts occur as mood episodes, which may include:

  • Depressive episodes
  • Manic episodes
  • Hypomanic episodes

Mood episodes often last for days, weeks, or longer and can affect relationships, work, school, sleep, decision-making, and overall well-being.

Bipolar disorder is a medical condition and is not simply a matter of personality, willpower, or occasional mood changes.

Bipolar Disorder

How is bipolar disorder different from ordinary mood swings?

Everyone experiences emotional ups and downs throughout life.

Bipolar disorder involves mood episodes that are typically more intense, longer-lasting, and more disruptive than ordinary mood fluctuations related to stress, disappointment, excitement, or daily events.

During manic or hypomanic episodes, a person may experience:

  • Increased energy
  • Reduced need for sleep
  • Racing thoughts
  • Increased confidence
  • Increased activity
  • Impulsive decision-making
  • Difficulty slowing down or resting

During depressive episodes, a person may experience:

  • Persistent sadness
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Fatigue
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Changes in sleep or appetite

A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is important because several other mental health conditions can sometimes resemble bipolar disorder.

Bipolar Disorder

What are the different types of bipolar disorder?

Bipolar I Disorder

Bipolar I Disorder involves at least one manic episode. Many individuals also experience depressive episodes, although a depressive episode is not required for diagnosis.

Bipolar II Disorder

Bipolar II Disorder involves episodes of major depression and hypomania, a less severe form of mania.

Cyclothymic Disorder

Cyclothymic Disorder involves ongoing mood fluctuations that do not fully meet the criteria for Bipolar I or Bipolar II Disorder but can still affect daily functioning and quality of life.

Your physician will help determine whether symptoms are consistent with bipolar disorder and, if so, which diagnosis may be most appropriate.

treatments

How is bipolar disorder treated

Treatment is individualized and often involves multiple components working together.

Treatment recommendations may include:

Medication Management

Medication is frequently an important part of treatment and may help stabilize mood, reduce symptoms, and decrease the likelihood of future mood episodes.

Psychotherapy

Therapy can help individuals better understand their symptoms, recognize early warning signs of mood changes, strengthen coping strategies, improve relationships, and support long-term stability.

Comprehensive Care

Sleep, stress, daily routines, relationships, and physical health can all influence mood symptoms. Treatment often involves looking at the broader picture rather than focusing on symptoms alone.

Can people with bipolar disorder live well?

Yes.

Many people with bipolar disorder lead meaningful, productive, and fulfilling lives with appropriate treatment and support.

The goal of treatment is not only symptom reduction but also helping individuals maintain stability, strengthen relationships, pursue personal goals, and improve overall quality of life.

Because bipolar disorder is often a long-term condition, ongoing care and monitoring can play an important role in maintaining wellness over time.

You Do Not Need a Diagnosis to Reach Out

Many patients come to Adelpha without knowing exactly what condition they may be experiencing.

Symptoms often overlap. Anxiety can look like ADHD. Depression can occur alongside trauma. Mood changes may have many possible causes.

The purpose of the consultation process is not simply to assign a label. It is to understand the full picture and help determine what type of support may be most appropriate.

Whether you have an existing diagnosis, are seeking a second opinion, or are simply looking for answers, our team can help guide the next step.

Insurance and Courtesy Billing

We know cost and insurance questions can be stressful. Our team will help make the financial side of care as clear as possible and help you understand what information is needed before treatment begins.

The first step is a consultation process.

What to Expect when you Reach Out

Thoughtful care starts with a thorough evaluation.

At Adelpha, getting started does not mean rushing into treatment without context. The first few visits start with an initial consultation period. This process includes at least two visits for adults and three visits for children and adolescents within the first month. This gives your physician or marriage and family therapist time to understand your history, current concerns, goals, previous treatment, and what kind of care may be helpful.

When appropriate, your physician or marriage and family therapist may ask to coordinate with your prior or current mental health providers, your primary care physician, or family members involved in your care. At the end of the consultation phase, we will share our impressions and recommendations. We will work with you to determine whether ongoing care with Adelpha is clinically appropriate and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
