Eating Disorder services offered in Encino, Pasadena and Oakland, CA

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders can affect physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, self-image, and daily functioning. They are complex conditions that involve much more than food or weight alone.

At Adelpha Psychiatric Group, our physicians provide thoughtful psychiatric care for adolescents and adults experiencing eating disorders and related concerns. We take time to understand the full picture, including eating behaviors, emotional health, medical history, family dynamics, and co-occurring mental health conditions.

Treatment may include psychotherapy, medication management, family involvement, and coordination with other healthcare professionals depending on each patient’s needs.

Eating Disorders

What are eating disorders?

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that affect thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships surrounding food, eating, body image, and weight.

Common eating disorders include:

  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Bulimia Nervosa
  • Binge Eating Disorder
  • Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
  • Rumination Disorder
  • Pica
While each condition presents differently, eating disorders can have significant emotional, psychological, and physical effects if left untreated.

Eating Disorders

What are common signs of an eating disorder?

Symptoms vary depending on the individual and the specific diagnosis, but common warning signs may include:
  • Significant weight changes
  • Restrictive eating patterns
  • Frequent binge eating episodes
  • Purging behaviors
  • Intense concern about body shape or weight
  • Avoiding meals with family or friends
  • Preoccupation with calories, food, or dieting
  • Excessive exercise
  • Emotional distress related to eating
  • Changes in mood, social engagement, or daily functioning
Some symptoms may be subtle, particularly in the early stages of an eating disorder.

Eating Disorders

When should I seek help?

It may be helpful to seek an evaluation if concerns about food, eating, weight, or body image are affecting emotional well-being, physical health, relationships, school performance, work, or daily life.

Parents may also consider seeking support if they notice changes in a child’s eating habits, weight, behavior, mood, or relationship with food.

Early intervention can often improve outcomes and help prevent symptoms from becoming more severe over time.

Eating Disorders

Can eating disorders occur alongside other mental health conditions?

Yes. Eating disorders commonly occur alongside other psychiatric concerns, including:
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Depression
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • ADHD
  • Trauma-related concerns
  • Mood disorders

Because symptoms often overlap, a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation can help identify contributing factors and guide treatment recommendations.

treatments

How are eating disorders treated?

Treatment depends on the individual’s diagnosis, symptoms, medical needs, and treatment goals.

Treatment recommendations may include:

Psychotherapy

Therapy is often an important part of treatment. Approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy, and other evidence-based modalities may be recommended depending on the situation.

Medication Management

Medication may be helpful for some individuals, particularly when depression, anxiety, OCD, or other co-occurring conditions are present.

Coordinated Care

Many patients benefit from a team-based approach that may include physicians, therapists, dietitians, primary care providers, and family members. When appropriate, Adelpha can help coordinate care with other professionals involved in treatment.

Can people recover from eating disorders?

Yes.

Recovery looks different for each person, but many individuals experience meaningful improvement with appropriate treatment and support.

The goal is not simply to change eating behaviors. It is to improve overall health, strengthen emotional well-being, support healthy relationships, and help individuals build a more sustainable relationship with food and themselves.

You Do Not Need a Diagnosis to Reach Out

Many patients come to Adelpha without knowing exactly what condition they may be experiencing.

Symptoms often overlap. Anxiety can look like ADHD. Depression can occur alongside trauma. Mood changes may have many possible causes.

The purpose of the consultation process is not simply to assign a label. It is to understand the full picture and help determine what type of support may be most appropriate.

Whether you have an existing diagnosis, are seeking a second opinion, or are simply looking for answers, our team can help guide the next step.

Insurance and Courtesy Billing

We know cost and insurance questions can be stressful. Our team will help make the financial side of care as clear as possible and help you understand what information is needed before treatment begins.

The first step is a consultation process.

What to Expect when you Reach Out

Thoughtful care starts with a thorough evaluation.

At Adelpha, getting started does not mean rushing into treatment without context. The first few visits start with an initial consultation period. This process includes at least two visits for adults and three visits for children and adolescents within the first month. This gives your physician or marriage and family therapist time to understand your history, current concerns, goals, previous treatment, and what kind of care may be helpful.

When appropriate, your physician or marriage and family therapist may ask to coordinate with your prior or current mental health providers, your primary care physician, or family members involved in your care. At the end of the consultation phase, we will share our impressions and recommendations. We will work with you to determine whether ongoing care with Adelpha is clinically appropriate and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
